Gather Round The Fire

With energy demand and cost rising, and natural resources falling, we have many difficult hurdles in our future rapidly approaching. For some of these hurdles, exciting new technology is the answer: clean energy generation and storage, for instance.

Surprisingly, some of these hurdles can be overcome (at least in the short term), by returning to old tradition. And it’s very simple: burn renewable wood to heat boilers.

Biomass boilers can cost around 13% less per year than gas in running costs, and emits less than 6% of the CO2 you’d expect from a common gas boiler!

As you’d expect, the slight catch to these benefits is the upfront cost. You can expect a wood pellet boiler to cost around 3 times as much as a gas-fired boiler. Altogether, the government has notably backed biomass burners to the point of active incentives.

Electricity is still by far the most expensive way to heat your home – and second only to coal fuel in terms of CO2 emissions. Of course, both of these are easily explained by the fact that energy generation is still undergoing the fossil-fuel teething process. In 10 years time, this balance is likely to be a lot closer. For the moment, biomass burning is indisputably the better option.
