Tradespeople are Happier

Tradespeople are Happier, According To A Recent Survey

We spend around half of our waking lives in the workplace. This might at first seem obvious, or meaningless. But UK workers have one of the lowest levels of job satisfaction across all of Europe. According to some surveys, as few as 41% of workers would describe their occupation as satisfying at all. This is extremely important.

Since a job takes up half of your life, low job satisfaction actually means low satisfaction with half of your entire life. And more to the point, most people live this way.

So are there any solutions? Less working hours? Higher education?

A survey by Ironmongery Direct seems to suggest that for some, a solution may already exist. And it may surprise you.

Taken from 950 Tradespeople, the results seem to be the opposite of the national average.
3 out of 4 tradespeople are happy with their work and their role. That’s almost twice as many as the national average.

Half of the people in the survey earned 30K a year or more, so taking over 2 weeks of holiday are certainly possible. But holidays often form a kind of band-aid plaster to the real issue. In essence, they are a break away from your life; an escape from the other 50 or so weeks. With a third of tradespeople taking less than 2 weeks off from their real life, that speaks for itself. Perhaps there’s less in their lives to escape from.

Since 2002, satisfaction has been falling, while skills shortages have been rising…

And this trend will continue.

10% of construction labour comes from over sea. This number is likely to fall. While the number of available workers continues to fall, the work itself will only continue to rise – with fewer and fewer skilled persons to do it.

To make matters even worse, over 37% of workers are nearing retirement age. That’s highly skilled labour that we’re not getting back: we don’t have enough tradespeople to fill that ever-growing gap.

Fortunately, with every serious issue comes even greater opportunity.

The construction sector is ever-hungry for new talent, and the future shows that it will only get hungrier. Financially, it’s obvious. But according to tradespeople themselves, the real reward seems to be something much greater and deeper: satisfaction.
