New Trades Career Reviews – Paulina

At New Trades Career we actively encourage women to consider a career in the building engineering and construction industries.

According to statistics 99% of on-site construction workers are male. And, sadly, only 14% of engineering courses are entered by women. At New Trades Career we want to help change this.

We are going to showcase a few of our female students who have been brave enough to enter this male-dominated industry.
Paulina is one of our welding students. The following is written in her own words:
When I was 16 years old I started to be interested in technologies and materials (of which something is done).
I decided to go to college with maths and physics. After college I went to University of Technology in Poland for five years in faculty ‘Functional Materials Engineering’. I’ve got degree ‘Bachelor in Material Engineering’. My thesis title was ‘Phosphate Glasses for Biomedical Applications’.

After three years I decided to go for another two years. I’ve got Master’s Degree in Engineering. My thesis title was ‘The Influence of Annealing Temperature on Grain Size in Copper Alloys’
During studies I went to internship company Jakusz Banking Security Systems’ where I assisted in the disposal of munitions in detonation chamber Andromeda; I assisted in the manufacture of cast explosives.
After finished my studies I worked in the office at Court Bailiff in Godansk. I wanted to improve my English and develop skills in engineering. I went to the UK. I studied at Rye School of English. I passed CSCS test for the CSCS card (Academically Qualified Person)
Welding! Why choose welding?
I had a welding subject at my University in Poland and it interested me very much. I decided to go for welding course and develop my knowledge.

I am happy that I am learning different materials, their properties, applications and different methods of welding.
I am very happy that I got many hours of practice in the workshop.
Every day of my practice I can get advice, help from the best teacher, Tom.
I would like to concentrate on welding thin materials (stainless steel, aluminium) by MAG/MIG and TIG methods.
In my future I would like to work in fabrication and welding materials by TIG method.
