Sanitary Installations in Confined or Restricted Areas

When it comes to installing additional bathrooms, showers or cloakrooms, in most cases soil and drainage systems can be easily located to enable the soil and waste pipework to be connected.

There are times when access to the building drainage system is either impossible or impractical. Examples of this are where cloakrooms, bathrooms etc. are to be installed in maybe a basement, loft conversion, or a room where there is no direct access to an internal or external soil pipe.

In the above cases to enable the waste and soil products to be discharged, you would need to use a macerator. This is basically a sealed tank which combines a stainless steel blade and a pump. When the WC is flushed or a sanitary appliance has water discharged into the unit, the blade will break down any solids and the contents are pumped via a 22mm-32mm pipe to discharge into the nearest soil pipe. Building regulations Part G states that a macerator unit may only be fitted, in a dwelling where there is already a gravity WC and wash basin fitted.

The French company Saniflo have been industry leaders in the macerator market over the years, the company manufacture various models depending on the installation it is to be used in. You can have a macerator that is connected to a WC alone or to a WC wash basin, shower, bidet. If you are installing a bath to a macerator be aware that because of the volume of water that is being discharged, you will have to specify the correct model for that installation. It may be that you will have to use a separate macerator for the bath waste water, so as not to invalidate the warranty.

Prior to installing a macerator it is best to check with the manufacturers’ installation instructions, what is required in the way of plumbing and electrical connections.
Below are links that can be coy and pasted to the Saniflo website and also to a recent article in Plumbing and Heating online magazine.
